Attachment theory and findings in attachment research help to frame our clinical understanding and treatment of adults who have experienced trauma. We will first review the basic tenets of attachment theory, including the classical work of Bowlby and Ainsworth, as well as the more recent work of Main, George, Fonagy et. al. and Lyons-Ruth. The clinical process will be studied in depth and case material will be presented.

Susan C. Warshaw. Ed.D., ABPP, is past co-chair(1992-95) of the Relational Track of the NYU Postdoctoral Program, where she also teaches and is a supervisor. She is on the teaching faculty of NYU’s Trauma Specialization. She was a prior supervisor and faculty member at the Minnesota Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis and NIP’s National Training Program.

NIP is a Non-Profit Educational institute Chartered by the New York State Board of Education.

THE NIP TRAUMA PROGRAM is dedicated to the exploration, understanding, teaching and clinical treatment of traumatic experience and its consequences within a psychoanalytic framework, and to the integration within this framework of other concepts and treatment modalities that may improve our capacity to alleviate the suffering of people whose traumatic experiences have overwhelmed their personal resources for recovery and growth.
